Citrates

Trisodium citrate dihydrate

Natural occurrence

Trisodium citrate dihydrate is a natural, odourless and colourless crystalline substance with a salty and slightly tart taste.

Production

Trisodium citrate is produced by the neutralisation of citric acid with sodium hydroxide followed by crystallisation in the dihydrate form. Citrique Belge produces two forms of trisodium citrate dihydrate, which differ in crystal size distribution. Trisodium citrate is packaged in 25 kg bags or big-bags.

Quality

Citric acid, sodium citrates and citric acid solutions are produced in line with the highest standards in the food and pharmaceutical industry. They invariably meet the requirements of the various specifications and tests under EP, USP, JP and FCC. The E-number of trisodium citrate is E331 (iii) and of monosodium citrate E331 (i).Applications

Trisodium citrate is widely used in the food industry, usually as flavor or as  preservative.  As such it is used as an ingredient in meat and dairy preparations. In ready to drink beverages and mixes, it contributes a tart flavor.  It is also widely used in buffer systems, where trisodium citrate together with citric acid are used to keep the pH at a given value. It is used in medical preparations to prevent blood from clotting. In technical applications it is also used to prevent or remove scaling, to change the hardening of concrete and numerous other applications.

Monosodium citrate anhydrous

Natural occurrence

Production

Monosodium citrate is produced by the partial neutralisation of citric acid with sodium hydroxide followed by crystallisation in the anhydrous form. Citrique Belge produces two forms of monosodium citrate which differ in crystal size distribution. Monosodium citrate is packaged in 25 kg bags or big-bags.

Quality

Citric acid, sodium citrates and citric acid solutions are produced in line with the highest standards in the food and pharmaceutical industry. They invariably meet the requirements of the various specifications and tests under EP, USP, JP and FCC.Applications

Monosodium citrate is mainly used in medicinal preparations and specialty food applications.
